Fontane Bianche in September and October — Sicily without the crowds

Villa Almarè · Seasonal guide · Eastern Sicily

There is a time of year when Fontane Bianche becomes almost unrecognisable — in the best possible way. The beaches empty out, the sea stays warm, prices drop, and restaurants finally have time for you. That time is September and October.

Why choose September or October at Fontane Bianche

The sea at Fontane Bianche reaches 26–28°C in September — the same temperature as July, but without the crowds. The water fed by underground freshwater springs stays crystal-clear and turquoise well beyond the end of August. You can swim comfortably until mid-October, when the Mediterranean still sits around 22–23°C.

Air temperatures drop to more pleasant levels: from 32–35°C in August to 24–27°C in September, falling to 20–22°C in October. Perfect for excursions, strolling the alleys of Ortygia, or hiking the trails of Pantalica without overheating.

The sea: still warm, finally empty

Fontane Bianche beach is considered one of the most beautiful in eastern Sicily — the Caribbean of Syracuse. Three kilometres of fine white sand, shallow water and emerald sea.

In August you share it with three thousand people. In September, half that. In October, you can lay your towel down almost wherever you like.

What to do in the surrounding area

Ortygia and Syracuse

The Neapolis Archaeological Park, the Greek Theatre and the Ear of Dionysius feel completely different out of season. Better light, no queues, photos without anyone else's head in the frame.

Noto — the baroque capital

In September Noto is at its best. Corso Vittorio Emanuele can be walked at a leisurely pace as the afternoon sun turns the baroque façades golden. October brings the Nero d'Avola grape harvest.

Pantalica and Cavagrande del Cassibile

These two UNESCO sites are almost uncomfortably hot in August. With temperatures of 22–25°C in September, trekking becomes a completely different and extraordinary experience.

Vendicari Nature Reserve

Pink flamingos arrive in October. The reserve's white sand beaches — Torre Sveva, Eloro, Calamosche — are completely deserted. White sand, turquoise sea, no one around.

Marzamemi

The small fishing village is at its very best in September and October. Restaurants with free tables, bluefin tuna and bottarga, an authentic atmosphere.

The Nero d'Avola harvest

September and October coincide with the grape harvest. Feudo Maccari, Cantine Gulino and Planeta Buonivini open for guided tours and tastings. A direct connection with the land and the people who work it. Distance: 20–40 minutes from Fontane Bianche.

Climate month by month

September: 24–29°C during the day, sea 26–28°C, 9 hours of sunshine
October: 20–24°C during the day, sea 22–24°C, 7 hours of sunshine
